Raga Yaman Kalyan

⏱ Early Evening — Dusk🎭 Shringara🎵 HindustaniThaat: Kalyan

A close sibling of Yaman, Yaman Kalyan uses both the natural and sharp Madhyam to create a richer, more complex evening raga that blends Yaman's sweetness with Kalyan's grandeur.

History & Origins

Yaman Kalyan occupies a unique position in the Kalyan family of ragas: it permits both the tivra (sharp) and shuddha (natural) Madhyam, which distinguishes it clearly from pure Yaman. This dual use of Ma gives the raga a more complex palette. The raga became prominent in the Khayal tradition from the eighteenth century onwards, associated particularly with the Agra and Gwalior gharanas.

The Notes of Raga Yaman Kalyan

Raga Yaman Kalyan is a Sampurna raga, meaning it uses sampurna notes. The ascending and descending movements of the raga are defined below. In Indian classical notation, lowercase letters indicate flattened (komal) notes, and t superscript indicates a sharpened (tivra) note.

Arohana (Ascending)
Sa Re Ga Ma(t) Pa Dha Ni Sa
Avarohana (Descending)
Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma(t) Ma Ga Re Sa

The Characteristic Phrase (Pakad)

The pakad is the signature melodic gesture of a raga: the phrase that immediately identifies it to an experienced listener. For Raga Yaman Kalyan, the pakad is:

Pakad
Re Ga Ma(t) Pa, Ga Ma(t) Re Ga Re Sa

Performance

The performance of Yaman Kalyan unfolds at dusk, alongside the Kalyan family. The musician must navigate the delicate balance between the two Madhyams: the sharp Ma establishing the Yaman character in the upper registers, while the natural Ma creates a more grounded, Kalyan-like quality in the lower. The vadi Ga is emphasised with characteristic ornaments that distinguish it from Yaman.

Spiritual Significance

Yaman Kalyan shares Yaman's primary rasa of shringara but with added complexity from the dual Madhyam. The natural Ma introduces a thread of karuna (a gentle wistfulness) that prevents the raga from being purely sweet. This makes it emotionally richer than Yaman, if slightly less immediately accessible.
