Raga Nat Bhairav

⏱ Morning🎭 Veera · Shanta🎵 HindustaniThaat: Bhairav

A jod raga combining the strength of Nat with Bhairav's morning gravity: Nat Bhairav uses Bhairav's flat Re and Dha in descent but natural notes in ascent, creating a raga of unusual heroic brightness for the early morning.

History & Origins

Nat Bhairav combines the Nat raga (known for its bright, heroic character, using all natural notes) with the Bhairav family's characteristic flat notes. The result is a raga that uses all natural notes in ascent (like Nat) but introduces komal re and komal dha in the descent (from Bhairav). This combination gives it a distinctly more heroic quality than pure Bhairav while retaining some of the morning gravity of the Bhairav family.

The Notes of Raga Nat Bhairav

Raga Nat Bhairav is a Sampurna raga, meaning it uses sampurna notes. The ascending and descending movements of the raga are defined below. In Indian classical notation, lowercase letters indicate flattened (komal) notes, and t superscript indicates a sharpened (tivra) note.

Arohana (Ascending)
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa
Avarohana (Descending)
Sa Ni dha Pa Ma Ga re Sa

The Characteristic Phrase (Pakad)

The pakad is the signature melodic gesture of a raga: the phrase that immediately identifies it to an experienced listener. For Raga Nat Bhairav, the pakad is:

Pakad
Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa, Ni dha Pa, Ma Ga re Sa

Performance

The contrast between the natural ascent and the komal-note descent is what gives Nat Bhairav its distinctive character. The ascending movement has a brightness and confidence quite different from Bhairav; the descent introduces the familiar Bhairav gravity. A musician must hold both personalities in balance throughout the performance.

Spiritual Significance

Nat Bhairav is one of the few morning ragas associated primarily with veera rasa: the heroism of the early morning, the discipline of the practitioner who rises before dawn. Its shanta is not the meditative stillness of Bhairav but the calm that comes from strength rather than surrender.
