Raga Hameer

⏱ Night — Second Prahar🎭 Veera · Shringara🎵 HindustaniThaat: Kalyan

A raga of heroic stature: Hameer uses both Madhyams and has a grandeur associated with royalty and chivalric valor, making it one of the few classical ragas with a primarily veera (heroic) character.

History & Origins

Hameer belongs to the Kalyan thaat and is notable for the use of both shuddha and tivra Madhyam: the natural Ma in its characteristic phrases and the sharp Ma in others. This dual Ma, combined with the raga's strong, wide-ranging movement across octaves, gives it an unusually bold character. It has been associated in the tradition with Rajput chivalry and the courts of north Indian kings.

The Notes of Raga Hameer

Raga Hameer is a Sampurna (vakra) raga, meaning it uses sampurna notes. The ascending and descending movements of the raga are defined below. In Indian classical notation, lowercase letters indicate flattened (komal) notes, and t superscript indicates a sharpened (tivra) note.

Arohana (Ascending)
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Ma(t) Dha Ni Sa
Avarohana (Descending)
Sa Ni Dha Ma(t) Pa Ma Ga Re Sa

The Characteristic Phrase (Pakad)

The pakad is the signature melodic gesture of a raga: the phrase that immediately identifies it to an experienced listener. For Raga Hameer, the pakad is:

Pakad
Ga Ma Pa Ma(t) Dha Ni Sa, Ni Dha Ma(t) Pa Ma Ga Re Sa

Performance

Hameer requires technical command across all three octaves: its phrases range widely and demand both power and control. The dual Ma in its characteristic movement (Ga Ma Pa Ma(t) Dha) creates a distinctive double-step quality that experienced listeners recognise immediately. The raga should be performed with authority and directness; it does not reward a tentative approach.

Spiritual Significance

Hameer's primary rasa is veera (heroism) which is unusual in the classical tradition, where karuna and shringara predominate. Its nobility comes not from aggression but from a quality of righteous confidence and expansiveness. In the traditional taxonomy, it is also associated with Shringara in a regal mode: the love of kings, generous and grand.
